| Description |
|
Petrified wood is a type of fossil. When wood is buried under sediment, the lack of oxygen preserves it. As mineral rich water flows through the wood, a stone mold eventually forms in place of the organic materials. The different minerals that flow through the wood determine the colors found in the fossil. In some cases, the original cellular structure of the wood is still visible.
